Hi {{first name | friend}},

Go ahead and try it.

Open ChatGPT, or Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview. Type in something a potential customer would actually ask. Something like: "What's the best [your service] for [your type of customer]?" or "Who are the top [your industry] experts right now?"

See what comes back.

If your business shows up, great. You're ahead of most people reading this.

If it doesn't? That's not a small problem. That is a growing, compounding, quietly expensive problem, and it is getting worse every single month you don't address it.

THE SEARCH LANDSCAPE JUST CHANGED AND MOST BUSINESSES MISSED THE MEMO

Here's what happened, fast.

For about 25 years, getting found online meant one thing: rank on Google. You wrote content, built links, optimized your pages, and climbed the results. Annoying, slow, competitive, but at least the rules were clear.

Then AI search arrived and rewrote the rules entirely.

ChatGPT now reaches 883 million monthly users. Google AI Overviews appear in nearly 55% of all Google searches. Perplexity is handling hundreds of millions of queries a month. And none of these platforms work like Google.

They don't show ten blue links. They generate an answer. A confident, direct, here's-what-you-need-to-know answer. And buried at the bottom, sometimes, is a short list of sources they pulled from.

Here's the part that should make you sit up: Gartner predicts traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI-powered platforms.

The traffic that used to flow through Google and land on your website? It is increasingly being intercepted by AI engines that answer the question and never send the user anywhere at all. Unless, that is, your business is one of the sources they trust enough to cite.

PROBLEM #1: YOUR GOOGLE SEO IS DOING NOTHING FOR AI SEARCH

This is the one that stings the most, because a lot of business owners have invested real time and money into SEO. Good rankings, solid content, maybe even some backlinks.

None of that automatically translates to AI visibility.

SEO optimizes content to rank on search engine results pages and drive clicks. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes content to be cited in AI-generated answers. SEO works at the page level: titles, keywords, backlinks. AEO works at the fact level: clear definitions, citable statistics, structured sections.

These are genuinely different disciplines. A page that ranks #1 on Google can be completely invisible to ChatGPT. The AI isn't looking for the most-linked page. It is looking for the clearest, most citable, most trustworthy answer to the question being asked.

If your content isn't structured to be extracted and cited by an AI engine, it doesn't matter how well it ranks. The AI will find someone else's answer and recommend them instead.

PROBLEM #2: YOUR BUYERS ARE RESEARCHING YOU IN CHATGPT BEFORE THEY EVER REACH YOUR WEBSITE

Think about how you research a purchase decision now. Do you open Google and click through five websites, reading each one? Or do you ask an AI to give you the quick version, compare your options, and point you toward the best fit?

Your customers are doing the same thing. 42% of buyers now use AI search as part of their evaluation process. They are asking ChatGPT things like "what should I look for in a marketing consultant" or "compare the top email marketing platforms for small businesses" before they've typed your URL into a browser.

What the AI says in that moment shapes their perception of the entire category, and of who belongs in it. If your brand isn't mentioned, you don't exist in that buyer's mind before they've even found you.

The flip side is worth knowing too. Leads coming through AI search converted at three times the rate of other channels. These are not casual browsers. They are people who already got their questions answered by an AI, were pointed toward you as a credible source, and arrived already warm.

That traffic is available to you. Right now. If your content is built for it.

PROBLEM #3: YOUR COMPETITORS MAY ALREADY BE THERE

Here is the uncomfortable reality about AEO: it rewards early movers.

LLMs form brand associations through patterns. When a brand consistently appears alongside certain topics, categories, and claims across multiple sources, the model is more likely to treat that brand as a relevant answer. Those associations take time to build. The businesses investing in AI visibility right now are training the models to see them as authorities in their category. The ones waiting? They are training the models to think of someone else.

The teams that start now, measure consistently, and iterate based on data will dominate their categories in AI search. This is not hype. The window for being early is open, but it is not staying open forever.
